Predictive Value of Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Regions at Invasive Tumor Front in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

چکیده
Purpose: While grading the tumor, histopathological evaluation of invasive front of the tumor is important as the morphological features registered reflect the important biological events within the tumor cells. This study was undertaken to determine the prognostic value of malignancy grading and Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Region (AgNOR) method in assessment of proliferative activity at the invasive tumor front of OSCC. Material and Methods: Excised tumor tissue and normal tissue were fixed, processed and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin stain and diagnosed, then successive section was stained with AgNOR and its counting was done at invasive tumor front. Correlation between conventionally used grading systems of Broder’s (1927) with that of Invasive Tumor Front grading of Bryne et al (1998) was done. Results: Increased proliferative activity and AgNOR count was found in tumor tissue than in normal tissue. A high statistical significance was found for mean AgNOR count and average of mean AgNOR / nucleus (p<0.01), average AgNOR count/nucleus according to clinical stage (p<0.05). Conclusions: Invasive front grading has much better predictive potential than any single tumor marker at the

Nucleolar Organizer Regions in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Several diagnostic methods are being employed to detect benign and malignant lesions, one of which is silver nitrate staining for organizer regions. The number of nucleolar organizing regions (NORs) can be used to show the degree of cell activity or metabolism in pathologic lesions. This study was designed to evaluate NORs as determi-nants of precancerous and squamous cell c...
متن کاملQuantitative Assessment of Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Regions in Nonsmokers, Smokers and Oral Submucous Fibrosis
Background: Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are defined as nucleolar components containing a set of argyrophilic proteins, which are selectively stained by silver methods. After silver-staining, the NORs can be easily identified as black dots exclusively localized throughout the nucleolar area and are called AgNORs. AgNORs have been used to assess biologic aggressiveness of lesions, such as ...
متن کاملDIFFERENTIATION BETWEEN MORPHOLOGICALLY AGGRESSIVE AND NON-AGGRESSIVE BASAL CELL CARCINOMA BY AgNOR STAINING
Argyrophilic staining of nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) has been considered to be useful in the diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of different cutaneous tumors. In order to evaluate the role of the AgNOR technique in discriminating aggressive from non-aggressive basal cell carcinoma (BCC), paraffin-embedded histologic sections from 30 cases of aggressive BCC (BCC2) and 30 cases of n...
متن کاملMorphometric evaluation of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region is useful in predicting long-term survival in squamous cell carcinoma of the lung.
Nucleolar organizer regions identified by means of an argyrophilic technique (AgNOR) were quantified by digital image analysis in 81 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Survival rate was modeled as function of AgNOR expression by Cox regression models controlled for staging, histologic grade, age, and sex. Our results indicate that AgNOR expression has a significant prognostic ro...
متن کاملDiagnostic Value of Proliferatin Index Including MIB1 and Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Regions Proteins in Uterine Smooth Muscle Tumors
Background and Objectives: Uterine smooth muscle tumors are the most common human neoplasm .They are divided clinically as benign and malignant but there is another group of lesions which is difficult to place in these two categories ,so-called smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP) and differentiation of these tumors on the basis of H&E staining is impossible . Th...
